Red Sadness Crew

The Red Sadness is a busy place, and the PCs are in constant close proximity to their shipmates. In such close quarters, friends and enemies become very important—enemies might attack at any moment, but friends can help watch your back.

19 pirates serve aboard the Red Sadness (in addition to the ship’s officers and the PCs). Like the PCs, most of them were impressed onto the crew, but some have been aboard for weeks or months. These pirates come from diverse backgrounds and vary enormously, and have very different attitudes toward the PCs. Some of these characters are just plain nasty and hostile, while others are more friendly, but even the most hostile NPC can be befriended with luck or chance.

With the exception of most of the ship’s officers, the PCs can interact with any of the crew NPCs during their time on the Red Sadness. Each NPC’s attitude to the PCs will be tracked below. Each attempt to influence an NPCs attitude requires a ship action, and a PC can only attempt one such check each day against a given NPC. There is no right or wrong way to approach these characters, but some NPCs have characteristics that influence their thinking, which can be discovered with a Diplomacy check to gather information or a Sense Motive check. Changes in an NPC’s attitude remain in place unless the PCs change it again through some action.

Friendly NPCs help out their shipmates during the day. A friendly NPC can provide a +2 bonus on any single job task skill check made by a PC, provided the NPC is the correct role (i.e. riggers help riggers and swabs help swabs).

Helpful NPCs can provide additional aid (beyond the above help with checks to do your job). Any NPC with a ‘Helpful’ attitude may be invoked once per day (more than that and you start infringing on them getting their own work done and reduce their attitude by 1 step). The PCs may call on any ability or asset the NPCs possess (spell casting, healing, skill checks, lending equipment, etc), or even pull them into a fight on your behalf.

yarr__swab_the_deck_by_codyawesome64-d59hp62.jpgSandara Quinnf
Sandara Quinn is an initiated priestess of Besmara the Pirate Queen, goddess of piracy. Impressed on the Red Sadness like the PCs, Sandara went out of her way to help them when they first arrived, by framing Jakes Magpie after Adrianna broke into the quartermaster’s stores, and also convincing the quartermaster to return a couple pieces of their personal equipment, claiming the items would bring a terrible curse on those who wrongfully held them. On a pirate ship, it’s not what you know but who you know that helps you get by…

She is responsible for destroying Caddis’ father after he drowned, but has no regrets given the ill-luck that the undead can bring to a ship. She is deeply greatful to all of the PCs for saving her during the storm and knows now that she was definitely right to give them the help she has.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Helpful

Fipps.jpgFipps Chumlett:
A fat, pushy fellow with a shaved head. He had the misfortune to make an off-hand comment while Thaduk was being whipped and has been terrified of the big orc’s reaction ever since. Thaduk has gone out of his way to repeatedly cow Fipps and knows deep down that he can count on the coward to jump off the ship if he asked.
Job: Swab.
Attitude: Helpful (wants to stay on Thaduk’s good side).

Thaduk_Smith.jpgThaduk Smith
Thaduk’s uncle who was also press-ganged from Moonplum. Because of his obviously skill as a craftsman and with a hammer, he has been made the Carpenter’s Mate and allowed to keep his weapon.
Job: Carpenter’s Mate
Attitude: Helpful

Jape.JPGJaundiced Jape:
A half-orc with severe jaundice, making his eyes appear yellow and his skin a sickly orange color. He has a single metal-stud piercing in the top of his left ear, marking him as an ex-slave. He is generally humorless and greedy, and talks in grunts and monosyllables (more from attitude than lack of intelligence). He is deeply grateful to Thaduk for saving him from drowning during the storm and has this strange idea that Caddis would make a good captain…
Job: Swab.
Attitude: Helpful

Giffer_Tibbs.JPGGiffer Tibbs
A well-dressed gnome with one eye. Giffer was once a London “swell”, the well-to-do son of a wealthy gnomish banker. He purchased himself a commission with the Imperial Navy, but was set upon by ruffians while out at a fine party just two nights before he was supposed to set sail and woke up to find himself press-ganged upon the Red Sadness. That was almost a year ago. He still wears the (rather worn out) tuxedo that he was wearing that night, as a reminder of his past life. The eyepatch is strictly an affectation, meant to make him look more menacing and help deflect some of the ribbing he takes for his choice of garments. He is terrified of Thaduk, but also a little grateful for the time that the big orc saved him from an unnecessary whipping.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Helpful.

Tilly_Bracket.jpgTilly Brackett:
A tough joker who likes her rum. She is a salt-blasted veteran sailor and years of drinking have left her well-preserved rather than girlish, and closer to burly than willowy. For all that, she has a rough charm and, if you can take her sense of humor, is otherwise upbeat and uncomplicated compared to many aboard the Sadness.

She is an incorrigible cougar, who preys on all charismatic, young, new male recruits to the Sadness, both for sex and as a target for her pranks. Leopold is her most recent victim, and she has shared his bunk every night since he arrived aboard the Sadness. Of course, she has also made a laughing stock of him aboard the ship, leaving him in a variety of compromising positions each morning, and causing him to be paraded naked around the main deck more than once.

She is half-in-awe, half-enraged at how handily Adrianna won that first game of heave, and probably the only one who was sufficiently conscious at the end to remember it. Despite this, she is on very good terms with all of the PCs after they saved her when she was washed overboard during a storm.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Helpful.

Jack-Scrimshaw.jpgJack Scrimshaw:
A young lad (barely 16) talented at scrimshaw. He is easy-going but has a tendency to drink much more heavily than he should and a strong protective streak. He was quick to say that he’d have Caddis’ back if anyone on the ship threatened him, but that has yet to be proven.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Friendly.

Thaduk_the_Sot.jpgThaduk the Sot:
The elder of Thaduk’s two uncles, Thaduk the Sot was the town drunk back in Moonplum, and continues that role aboard the Red Sadness. While he trusts his brother and his nephew, he is usually too deep into a bottle to be particularly helpful, and gets the shakes bad when he is not. If he could be sobered up a bit, he is just as strong as the other two Thaduks.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Stinking Drunk…

Mace_Dunlop.JPGMace Dunlop
Mace is among the most recent group of Moonplum natives to be press-ganged aboard the Red Sadness. He has no wife, nor children, and according to Moonplum locals has aged himself prematurely exploring the island; he is in his thirties, but looks to be in his fifties. He believes Caddis’s and Thaduk’s story that they had no choice in the destruction of Joshua Duncaster’s boat, and, having witnessed the fight with the turtle, does not blame them for Joshua’s death like Henrye does. Having no immediate family back in Moonplum, he is content to follow the youngsters’ lead for now and see where this strange turn of events takes him.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Indifferent

Jessica.jpgJessica Duncaster
Caddis’ deaf, mute, and beautiful sister. She was taken during the raid on Moonplum and has been put to work as a cabin girl alongside Caulky Tarroon. Her inability to speak has already made her a favorite of the taciturn captain. She is growing progressively more resentful of her brother’s failure to rescue her from her situation, especially since she witnessed Caddis blow up their father’s ship and aid in his also being press-ganged aboard the Sadness and his subsequent death.
Job: Cabin Girl
Attitude: Unfriendly.

Crimson_Cogward.jpgCrimson “Cog” Cogward
Crimson Cogward (so called after the color his neck turns when he’s angry) is a loner, and prone to incredible rages and dark moods. He wears a blue scarf tied tight around his head to hide the scar left when his ear when bitten off in a bar fight.
Job: Swab
Attitude: Unfriendly

Conchabar.jpgConchobhar Turlach Laflèche
Conchobhar Laflèche is a older, honey-tongued, Frenchman who wears a foppish purple hat and a white silk shirt. His appearance is that of someone actively pretending to be a pirate, rather than a true buccaneer.

Attitude: Hostile

A big-boned, bad tempered, ex-harlot from the slave port of Mozambique. Despite her background, Aretta is self-taught, and an avid reader, with a particular fondness for the Romantics. She can often be found late at night, curled up in the forcastle with a lamp and a book.

badger.jpg“Badger” Medlar:
An older woman who shaves her gray hair into stripes. She was the reigning arm-wrestling champion until Thaduk Jr. thoroughly crushed her in his first match. Her right hand was destroyed and she is currently paying a visit to the ship’s surgeon…
Job: Swab.
Attitude: Hostile.

175px-Henry_Allingham_in_1916.jpgHenrye Allingham
After the attack on Moonplum, Henrye impetuously took rounded up six able-bodied men of the village and set out in Joshua Duncaster’s fishing trawler to catch the pirates that had raided their village and kidnapped several Moonplum villagers. The ill-advised voyage ended only a few days later in the destruction of the boat at the hands of the pirates, their capture, and the eventual death of Joshua Duncaster.
After being press-ganged onto the Red Sadness, Henrye learned that it was two of Moonplum’s own (Caddis and Thaduk) that were manning the cannon that destroyed Joshua’s boat. He later witnessed these two being chummy with the crew, serving up meals, handing out gifts, and even Thaduk ordering other pirates around and being promoted to Bosun’s Mate. He has decided that Thaduk and Caddis must have been in cahoots with the pirates from the start and betrayed Moonplum, and is determined to find a way to get off the ship and make sure they face justice.
